In collaboration with partners of Eco Design Fair Shanghai – a community event showcasing innovation and design in Shanghai held this April 14th 2012 for the 4th year – Shanghai Flaneur has developed GREEN WALKS. These will explore sustainability issues and destinations in Shanghai.

The Green Dream: An Investigation of Sustainable Architectural Trends in Shanghai.
As China and Shanghai rapidly develop sustainability is increasingly becoming a concern for its residents. Sustainability is however a concept which is often difficult to recognize and realize in our built environment. This walk investigates these issues through a working designer’s eyes. Ashley Reta and Scott Burroughs from the architecture office A00 are exploring different ideas about what makes a building green and use case studies for illustration, they look at new constructions as well as renovations at multiple scales, and also talk about terms and labels they should be aware of when evaluating green design.

A Water Walk: Exploring Shanghai Drop by Drop.
Water is the source of life, the natural blue jewel that gives life, energy and fertility to all living organisms. Led by water and ocean conservation expert Talya Enriquez Romano,

the Water Walk tells Shanghai’s water story, followed by a ferry tour across the Huangpu River. While “on-the-water” Talya will discuss how we consume and treat water in our lives, as well as our urban centers. Across on the Pudong side an interactive water quiz testing participants knowledge of interesting water facts is integrated in this Water exploration Walk.

Sustainable City: Green neighborhood development.
Neighborhood is a place with its own unique character and function, where people can live, work, shop, and interact with their neighbors. Over the last two decades most of urban areas of Shanghai have been redeveloped with high density of buildings and traffic roads. On one hand housing conditions have been improved dramatically, on another hand the traditional neighborhood characters have been destroyed and people are more and more isolated. Is current practice sustainable? The topic is facilitated by environmental expert Dr. Pan Tao from Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC).

The above GREEN WALKS are talking place in the frame of Flaneur Public Walks for the first time in April. Check our calendar!
