has followed developments in China for the last 30 years. He first visited Shanghai in 1980, with the Cultural Revolution not long over and as one of the very few
foreigners in the city. He studied Chinese and History in Germany and China.

Following stays in Beijing, Tianjin, Hong Kong and Nanjing, Hartmut Oertel has lived with his family for the last ten years in Shanghai. After working in banking and business development, he is now a freelance consultant. He is a keen traveler through China on both private and business trips.
