has studied sinology, history, literature and religions in Berlin, Beijing and the United States and currently teaches Chinese history at Nanjing University. Her expertise and passion evolve around topics like European colonial history (particularly British and German history in China), and Chinese art, religion and literature of late Imperial and Republican China. She wrote her PhD thesis about the British-French military expedition to China in 1860 and particularly about the so called “old summer palace” of the Qing emperors, the Yuanming yuan.

For Shanghai Flaneur, Ines offers excursions on the topics of “Chinese-European colonial history. She also guides Flaneur-Guests through Nanjing, and tells stories about the history of the Southern Imperial Capital and about China’s Schindler, the German John Rabe.

“I have been living in Shanghai for more than 8 years. Over the years I read a lot about China’s history, but honestly, I often mix up the facts and stories of the past. During the 4 hours excursion “On the traces of German-Chinese relations in Shanghai” guided by Ines, all the puzzle pieces of my fragmented China knowledge were put together again in the correct order. Ines deep understanding about China and her perspectives helped to bring back the “flow” and the structure into my thoughts. Fantastic experience, thanks a lot to Shanghai Flaneur for this very enriching experience!”
